Fulton Phase 2 Ribbon Cutting Friday At 4PM
The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP) will join 27th Ward Alderman Walter Burnett Jr and the West Loop Community Organization (WLCO) Friday, June 25 at 4PM, at the intersection of Racine and Fulton, for a Ribbon Cutting to celebrate of the 2nd Phase of the Fulton Streetscape Project. In the event of rain, the Ribbon Cutting will move into Revel Fulton Market (1215 W Fulton Market).
Given the likelihood of rain/storms, the remainder of our planned event has been postponed. However, Friday, there will still be a quaint “Who are the People in Your Neighborhood” activation with photographers Anna Cillan and David Sabat, nosh from Eleven Eleven (while supplies last!) and a live mural painting with artist Jas Petersen and Ambassadors of Your Passion 1st.
Since 1969, Sesame Street’s "The People in Your Neighborhood" has sung the praises of the people that make communities go. In 2020, in the face of the COVID-19, the campaign highlighted essential workers, including healthcare professionals, grocery store and food service workers, and other frontline heroes. As we emerge into the post-pandemic world, we’re sharing the stories of impact, resilience, and hardship that all our neighbors endured so that, together, we can heal.
The Fulton Streetscape Project highlights the historic character of the neighborhood while making it more pedestrian friendly and adds placemaking features such as benches and planters.
Features of the second phase of the project include:
Granite cobbled intersections with granite accents and attractive street furniture, including seating and bike racks, throughout the project area.
New, widened sidewalks, shorter pedestrian crossings at intersections and new energy-efficient LED street lighting.
Design that enhances the industrial character by maintaining raised sidewalks and dock areas on certain blocks.
Separate truck parking zones and a wide through lane allowing adequate room for cars to maneuver.
Formalized angled and parallel parking areas that serve as loading zones during industrial hours and parking during entertainment hours.
The Streetscape plan was approved by the Landmarks Commission in 2015. A gateway arch was constructed at the entrance to the district on Fulton Market west of Halsted Street in 2015. Work on the first phase from Halsted to Carpenter, was completed in November 2018. The second phase began in 2019. The total cost for both phases of the project is $20.3 million.
We hope to see you tomorrow! And stay tuned for new “Who Are The People In Your Neighborhood” celebration dates.
