May 14 Public Gathering Passing Through West Loop

”Rally for Abortion Justice: Chicago” will begin at Union Park and move down Washington Boulevard into the downtown area.

At the request of the Chicago Police Department’s (CPD) local 12th District, please be advised of a planned public gathering taking place this Saturday, May 14th, 2022, at 9:30AM. The organizer, “Rally for Abortion Justice: Chicago,” plans to begin a national solidarity march at Union Park (1501 West Randolph Street) that will move down Washington Boulevard as participants make their way into the downtown area.

Throughout the week, the organizer is canvassing the West Loop to notify residents and businesses of their plans. In addition, the 12th District’s morning and afternoon bike teams are visiting businesses along the Washington Boulevard commercial corridor to ensure safety and awareness for everyone.

Residents and businesses along the planned march route in the West Loop can stay prepared by following a few key recommendations:

  • Residents can receive Notify Chicago emergency alerts by subscribing to Chicago’s text or email alert system; business can sign up for CHIBIZ Alerts by texting “CHIBIZ” to 67283 or by visiting chicago.gov/chibizalerts. Through these programs, you will receive targeted alerts when known activity is occurring in your area.

  • In the event your business and/or home are located along routes used for public assembly, in efforts to allow for safe passage, please consider temporarily relocating any items and/or vehicles within or near the public way. You can also monitor any public transportation changes at transitchicago.com.

  • As CPD recommends: please remember that if any crime or incident is in progress and the on-site presence of a local authority is necessary, please dial 911. If a crime or incident occurs and the suspected offender(s) is/are no longer at the scene, please dial 311.

Advocating public safety within the West Loop neighborhood is a standard practice of WLCO’s day-to-day responsibilities. We once again recognize the right of peaceful public assembly as enshrined in the Illinois Constitution’s Bill of Rights, Article 1, Section 5: “The people have the right to assemble in a peaceable manner, to consult for the common good, to make known their opinions to their representatives and to apply for redress of grievances.”

If you have questions about this public gathering, or if you are located along the planned march route and would like more advice on how to stay safe and prepared, please contact the 12th District at 312-746-8396.
