Public Safety Reminders Amid Heightened Awareness

In light of developing events around the nation, including the potentially imminent conclusion of the Minnesota v. Chauvin trial and the recent police killings of Daunte Wright near Minneapolis and Adam Toldeo in Chicago, the Chicago Police Department’s (CPD) 12th District has asked us to update you on what pre-emptive security measures are being deployed City-wide, in addition to reminding you what public safety resources exist for residents and businesses alike. Please know that, at this time, we have no credible information about imminent unlawful activity, and we will update you if the situation evolves. Out of an abundance of caution, Chicago is prepared for any public gatherings that may occur, with special attention on retail corridors throughout the City.

Real-time communication will continue through CHIBIZ Alerts and email notifications. Residents can receive Notify Chicago emergency alerts by subscribing to Chicago’s text or email alert system; businesses can opt-in to receive emergency alerts by texting CHIBIZ to 6-7-2-8-3.

In the event your business and/or home are located along routes used for public assembly, in efforts to allow for safe passage, temporarily relocate any items and vehicles on the public way. As CPD recommends: if an incident is in progress and the on-site presence of a local authority is necessary, please dial 911. If an incident occurs and the suspected offender(s) is/are no longer at the scene, please dial 311. And in any event of public transportation changes, transitchicago.com will have the most up-to-date information.

As always, the West Loop Community Organization (WLCO) advocates for a Chicago that is safe for everyone, everywhere; and we recognize the right to peaceful public assembly as enshrined in the Illinois Constitution's Bill of Rights, Article I, Section 5: “The people have the right to assemble in a peaceable manner, to consult for the common good, to make known their opinions to their representatives and to apply for redress of grievances.”

We thank you for staying vigilant. If you have any questions or concerns, the 12th District can be reached at 312-746-8396, and our offices can be contacted at 312-666-1991 or info@westloop.org.
